The Eco-Friendly wedding – 5 quick tips

09Mar11

As March storms in like a lion (and hopefully leaves like a lamb) many of us are in peak prep time for the upcoming spring wedding season.  But there is always time for a few tips on how to welcome the wedding season with open eco-friendly arms.
Here are 5 quick tips to get you started

Eco friendly Flowers
While this sounds so obvious, many flowers are not locally sourced, which means they need to shipped in.  Imports will always result in a heavy carbon footprint.  Another point that many over look is the use of non-biodegradable or recyclable materials used in your arrangements such as floral foam, tape, and so-on.  Even the use of coloured dyes to coax the colours we want out of the flowers we’re using.

Your options: Look for local florist like Eco|Stems, in Toronto, that emphasize their commitment to the environment by using locally sourced flowers and biodegradable materials, and eco efficient energy sources.

Bullfrog Power
A lot of electricity goes into your event.  Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you’re giving back at the same time.  Look for facilities that are already Bullfrog powered, such as the Kortright Centre for Conservation.  They are well equipped to handle your eco-friendly requests, and are still located nearby.  Alternatively, look into event spaces where you can Bullfrog your event, such as the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse.

Seeded Stationery
Seeded stationery is easy to come by these days, and is oh-so-pretty!  What could be nicer than the feel of real hand-made paper with pretty little flowers embedded?  And as a bonus you can plant it and be greeted with gorgeous blooms as a fresh reminder of the wedding.  You can find seeded paper at many stationery and card shops these days, but if you want a quick way to check out your options visit Botanical Paperworks.  They are a Canadian company, based out of Manitoba, and they have a fantastic selection.

Locally Sourced Food
Food is a huge part of any event, and it’s one that’s often remembered.  While there are loads of talented caterers out there, there is still something special and enticing about locally sourced food.  The freshness, the flavour – everything is just a little more tempting when you know it hasn’t had to travel far or be handled too much.  Check out some of the cities eco-friendly caterers, like Treeline Catering, to ensure you’re not only giving back to the environment, but that you’re getting the freshest options!

Dress Cleaning
When it’s all said an done, you want to take care of that amazing gown!  Whether it’s a delicate vintage hand-me-down, or a new custom designer extravaganza, it will require the utmost care in preserving it to last.  While many dry cleaners are moving towards a greener approach (and while there are many dry cleaner that offer specialized wedding gown care) it’s hard to find ones that specialize in both.  Dove Cleaners is a great place to start.  They are centrally located, easy to get to, and they pride themselves on their green cleaning options.

Thankfully, there are dozens more options available – which is a great step in the right direction.  If you weren’t sure where to start, then these options should spark your imagination.
